"Do's and Don'ts" About the Flag

There are formal rules for displaying and care of our Flag: the "United States Flag Code".
For the official document visit: https://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30243.pdf
Major points from the U.S. Flag Code (example images below)
Do:
-be respectful of the symbol of our Democracy
-the flag itself is not an article of clothing to be worn
-it should not touch the ground
-it should not be subjected to be activities that get it dirty (should not be left in rain/snow)
-when damaged, torn or worn it should be disposed of by incineration
-gold fringe borders on the flag may be added for indoor display
-for flags that cannot be flown at half-staff; attach a black ribbon to the top of the Flag

-Orientation:
a) stars and blue box (called the union or canton) should always be top-left when hanging on a structure
b) if affixed to uniform or vehicle - canton should be on top front-facing the direction of movement "the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward"

Don't:
-deface actual flags
-wear them as clothing (Willful wearing of the Flag can be a form of mild protest, see section on "The Flag in Protest". We staunchly defend your right to use the Flag as you see fit.
